Greek islands will testify to their immense
natural beauty, and the fact that there is
nowhere else in the world quite like them.
Broken down in to small groups, the various
Greek Islands all have their own unique
charm and beautyand to no two islands are the same. From the
Venetian influence on the
Ionian islands, to the classical

Cyclades Islands, you have wonderful
choice of where to visit. The
Greek Islands offer something for everyone, and everyone will always remember their

The
Saronic Gulf Greek Islands are very popular with visitors to
Athens, as they are
very close to the mainland, and with easy access from the port of
Piraeus, there can be
no excuse for not visiting, at least, a
selection of the islands to be found here. The popular island of
Aegina (Egina) is the
largest of the islands, and is probably the
easiest and fastest one with which to arrive at from Piraeus.
The other
Saronic Gulf Greek Islands, such as
Poros, Hydra and Spetses are all within
close proximity to each other, and
day trips to all of the
Saronic Gulf islands are a very popular activity with visitors to
Greece who may not have
enough time to further explore some of the other
islands all around Greece.
The 4 main islands that make up the group known as the
Sporades Greek Islands are very popular with visitors who travel to
Central or Northern Greece. The
Sporades Islands are part of both the prefectures of
Magnesia (in Central Greece) and the large island of
Evia. The
scenery here on these
Greek islands is stunning and
very green. The
Sporades Greek Islands are the perfect destination for people who prefer
quiet and relaxing holidays away from the busy nightlife of other islands.
The Cyclades Greek Islands are probably the most
famous and popular of all of the island groups in
Greece. Consisting of 39 islands, of which
24 are inhabited, the
Cyclades Islands are where you will find those glorious images of
small white churches, set against a backdrop of
blue skies and deep blue seas. The famous
Greek islands of
Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos and Paros all reside within this group. As well as having many
interesting sites and places of interest, these islands also have a very
popular nightlife and entertainment scene, with many bars, restaurants, discos, and other activities.
The Dodcanese Greek Islands, situated in the far south-east of the
Aegean Sea, are also very
popular destinations for many travelers. The large and famous island of
Rhodes can be found here in the
Dodecanese, as well as other
Greek Islands such as
Kos, Simi and Karpathos. Some of these islands are very close to mainland
Turkey, and you can find
ferry boats that travel to Turkey from these islands, if you wish to have
further explorations during your holidays.
The other group of
Greek Islands that is located close to Turkey is the
North East Aegean Greek Islands. The islands of
Samos, Chios and Lesbos (Lesvos, Mytilini, Mitilini) can all be found here. With many
interesting sites to visit and a flavor of the east, these Greek islands are
extremely popular with visitors.
The Ionian Greek Islands, located to the
west side of Greece, are again, very
unique, and the
Venetian influence on these islands can be seen straight away. They offer very
different scenery to other
Greek Islands around
Greece, such as the Cyclades. The islands of
Kefalonia, Corfu and Zakynthos (Zante) are very popular with visitors, and are amongst the
most popular in Greece.
The stunning island of
Crete (Creta or Kreta), the
largest of all the
Greek Islands, is the last stop in the
Mediterranean, before reaching
Africa. It is almost a small country amongst itself. With many
popular destinations all over Crete, it is one island that offers
very different holidays, depending on where you plan to visit. Some areas of
Crete are perfect for those
quiet and relaxing holidays, whereas other parts are
full of life and entertainment. The various regions of
Crete island (Kriti) are also quite different to each other, and it is a
wonderful island to travel around and to
explore.
